Guidance on Moisture and Mold: A Workshop for Environmental Health Professionals and Health Practitioners ( 8:00 a.m.- 4:00 p.m., Athens Room) - The Center for Indoor Environments and Health at the University of Connecticut Health Center is pleased to offer this one-day, interactive workshop. Moisture and mold growing in indoor environments, and the potential consequence of exposure on health, pose complex concerns. The workshop will combine presentations and small group exercises designed to develop knowledge and tools to understand, respond, and communicate about mold and moisture. Environmental health professionals will become acquainted with "building science" and explore environmental assessment, moisture control strategies, and intervention approaches. Clinicians will learn how to assess symptoms and illnesses that may have environmental components and learn how to use technical data and reports to evaluate their patients' possible exposure to moisture and mold. The University of Connecticut School of Medicine designates this educational activity for a maximum of 6 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)TM. The National Environmental Health Association will offer 6 CE hours to attendees completing the course. There is no charge for this workshop. ATSDR's Cooperative Agreement Program to Conduct Site-Specific Activities (Beginning at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 28th, lasting until 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 29th, Savannah Room) will meet with its funded state and tribal partners directly after the conclusion of the conference. Environmental Justice Expert Panel Meeting (Beginning at 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 28th, lasting until 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 29th, Augusta Room) Sponsored by CDC's Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Branch, this convening will help to identify potential environmental justice solutions to some of the nation's most pressing challenges to healthy housing. National Conversation on Public Health and Chemical Exposures Listening Session (2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. Athens Room) -
Conference participants and interested members of the public are invited to an open, facilitated discussion to exchange ideas and explore issues related to the National Conversation. Potential discussion topics include: the National Conversation structure and process; lessons learned from the nation's historical approach to public health and chemical exposures; the nation's current shortcomings, gaps, and redundancies; and high priority options for better protecting the public from harmful chemical exposures. NCEH/ATSDR staff, RESOLVE staff, and others involved in the National Conversation project will be in attendance to engage in discussion and collect participant input. Skill-Building Institute for Health Care Professionals on Managing Exposures to Indoor Asthma Triggers (2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m., Valdosta Room) -
The American College of Preventive Medicine (ACPM) will provide a training institute for health care providers and public health professionals that focuses on the importance of prevention and aims to enhance the ability of health professionals to incorporate high quality asthma and environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) management into their daily practice. The speakers will describe approaches which can be incorporated into practice, including asthma guidelines and the Chronic Care Model. The session will highlight the role of environmental exposure history taking and provide examples that can be incorporated into patient visits. The speakers will discuss asthma management strategies, with an emphasis on patients from underserved communities. This institute will encourage dialogue with at risk patients on harmful exposures and ultimately lead to reduced asthma attacks nationwide. Click here for more information and to register.

Towards a National Biomonitoring Plan (8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Athens Room) - APHL will host a national meeting of individuals working in laboratory science, epidemiology, toxicology, environmental health and public policy to explore the development of a national biomonitoring plan. Using APHL's five-year plan to establish a National Biomonitoring Network as a starting point, participants in this one-day working session will describe the essential components and features, identify the necessary infrastructure, and outline the key steps to creating and supporting a national biomonitoring system.
